In one candid moment, Demi shares how her early experience in the music industry shaped her creative process. She recalls meeting with her management team at just 15 years old, excited to showcase her songwriting talent. “I played them the 5 songs I was most proud of,” she says, expecting a positive reaction. Instead, the response she got changed everything. “They said, ‘Okay, let’s go into the studio with these and these songwriters.’ And that took away the raw connection I had with music.”
The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer explains how this pivotal moment led to a shift in how she made music, admitting that it “took away my confidence.” The pressure to create hits, she explains, soon took the joy out of the process. “I’m in the studio thinking twice about everything I do and write. It’s a cycle that seems to never end,” she says, hinting at the toll it has taken on her creative freedom.
The documentary Child Star not only highlights Demi’s personal battles but also underscores the challenges many young stars face, from struggles with mental health to dealing with addiction, body image, and the pressures of constant scrutiny. Child Star is now available to stream on Hulu.
