Dove Cameron is speaking candidly about the long road to her long-awaited debut album and her complicated history with Columbia Records.
While promoting her new Amazon series 56 Days in a recent interview with Paper Magazine, Cameron reflected on years of stalled momentum behind the scenes. The singer revealed that she had been writing and planning an album since 2018, shortly after signing her record deal. Yet, according to Cameron, the project repeatedly failed to receive formal approval.
“I’m going to be honest,” Cameron said. “I have been talking about writing and planning an album for as long as I had been signed with my label. It was done multiple times. It wasn’t even about them not feeling that it was ready. I don’t even know if they heard some of the music. I think it was just like, not now, not now, not now. God knows why.”
In 2023, Cameron released her debut EP, Alchemical: Volume 1, through Disruptor Records and Columbia. The project showcased a darker, alt-pop sensibility and built on the breakout success of “Boyfriend,” which became a viral hit and reached the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. Follow-up singles “Breakfast,” “Lethal Woman,” and “Sand” further amplified anticipation for her debut album.
Still, a full-length album never materialized. Despite the setbacks, Cameron has remained musically active. Throughout 2025, she released a string of standalone singles, including “Too Much,” “French Girls,” and “Romeo.”
Her touring trajectory has also expanded. Last summer, she joined Dua Lipa on select European dates of the Radical Optimism Tour, performing at major stadiums such as Wembley and Anfield. More recently, she confirmed on Good Morning America that she will open for an as-yet-unannounced headliner this fall while quietly planning her own tour. Earlier this year, the 30-year-old singer also announced that the LP will be released in 2026.
