After months of fan theories and speculation, Finneas has finally clarified the meaning behind the closing lyric of Billie Eilish’s third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft. Speaking about the final track, “Blue,” the producer and songwriter revealed that the now-famous line — “But when can I hear the next one?” — wasn’t a hint at a secret double album or follow-up release.

Instead, Finneas explained that the lyric was meant as a reflection on how quickly audiences consume music in the digital era. “I hope that’s open to interpretation,” Finneas recently said. “To me, it was a comment on spending a year and a half making an album, and they consume it in 40 minutes and are like, ‘Give me another record!’”

The comment sheds new light on a moment that has fascinated fans since the album’s release in May 2024. When Hit Me Hard and Soft first dropped, listeners were quick to notice the final lyric’s ambiguity, sparking widespread theories online about whether Eilish was teasing a second part to the project.

The speculation grew even stronger after Billie’s interview with Zane Lowe, where she smiled and dodged questions about the lyric — a moment fans took as confirmation of a potential “red-themed” sister album, following the blue aesthetic of the original release. But according to Finneas, the lyric wasn’t about a sequel — it was about the immediacy and pressure of today’s streaming culture.

Released via Darkroom and Interscope Records, Hit Me Hard and Soft marked Billie’s first full-length project since Happier Than Ever (2021). The record received universal critical acclaim, topping charts in more than 20 countries and earning seven Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year.
