Excitement surrounding the 2026 Grammy Awards continues to build. The main ceremony takes place this Sunday, February 1, with artists and fans alike eager to see which recordings will take home the industry’s highest honors. Among the night’s most prestigious awards is Record of the Year, a category that recognizes excellence in the finished recording.

Record of the Year honors the overall sonic achievement of a song, focusing on performance, production, arrangement, and engineering— including mixing and mastering—while songwriting plays a secondary role. The award is presented to the performing artist(s), producer(s), engineer(s)/mixer(s), and mastering engineer(s) behind the recording.

The 2026 nominations largely mirror those for Song of the Year, with one key exception: Chappell Roan’s “The Subway” replaces HUNTR/X’s “Golden.” This year’s nominees are Lady Gaga (“Abracadabra”), Bad Bunny (“DtMF”), Sabrina Carpenter (“Manchild”), ROSÉ & Bruno Mars (“APT.”), Kendrick Lamar & SZA (“Luther”), Billie Eilish (“Wildflower”), Chappell Roan (“The Subway”), and Doechii (“Anxiety”).

As Grammy night approaches, here are our predictions for Record of the Year.

Predicted Winner: “Abracadabra” — Lady Gaga

Producers: Cirkut, Lady Gaga, Andrew Watt

Engineers/Mixers: Bryce Bordone, Serban Ghenea, Paul LaMalfa

Mastering: Randy Merrill

In true Gaga fashion, “Abracadabra” is a masterclass in high-energy, theatrical pop production. From its explosive builds and layered synths to its dynamic vocal processing and immaculate mix, the track delivers a bold, cinematic soundscape that feels deliberately maximalist and meticulously crafted.

The song stands out as one of the brightest highlights on Mayhem, showcasing production precision and sonic ambition that align perfectly with the Recording Academy’s criteria for Record of the Year. Notably, despite her long and decorated career, Lady Gaga has never won this category—making “Abracadabra” both a career-defining moment and a compelling frontrunner.

Strong Contenders

Several nominees remain serious threats in an exceptionally competitive field:

• Kendrick Lamar & SZA — “Luther”

“Luther” may be Gaga’s strongest challenger. Featured on Lamar’s GNX, the track blends warm, restrained production with atmospheric textures that allow both artists to shine. Its slow-burn arrangement, polished mix, and emotional balance reflect the refinement of a collaboration that continues to evolve. After their massive hit “All the Stars” went winless in 2019, a victory here would feel overdue.

• ROSÉ & Bruno Mars — “APT.”

A viral juggernaut with undeniable studio finesse, “APT.” excels in pop-funk craftsmanship. Its infectious groove, seamless bilingual vocal exchange, crisp percussion, and glossy, radio-ready mix make it one of the year’s most technically impressive recordings.
