The Recording Academy has unveiled a sweeping set of updates for the 69th Grammy Awards, introducing five new categories and several significant rule changes that will take effect for the 2027 Grammys. Announced on June 16, the revisions reflect the Academy’s annual member-driven review process and its effort to keep pace with a rapidly evolving global music industry.

Among the biggest headlines is the creation of Best Asian Pop Music Performance, a category designed to recognize excellence in Asian pop music, including K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, and other works that feature meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. The move marks a major milestone for one of the fastest-growing sectors of the global music business and could open the door for more direct Grammy recognition for artists dominating international charts and streaming platforms.

The Recording Academy also introduced Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, which honors collaborative R&B recordings and performances by established groups. As a result, the existing Best R&B Performance category has been renamed Best R&B Solo Performance.

Traditional music receives expanded recognition as well. Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance has been added to celebrate classic pop interpretations and vocal styles distinct from contemporary pop trends. In the folk field, Best Traditional Folk Album joins the ballot, prompting the existing Best Folk Album category to be renamed Best Contemporary Folk Album.

Meanwhile, Latin music creators will benefit from the launch of Best Latin Song, a songwriter-focused category recognizing newly written songs performed predominantly in Spanish. The award will be presented directly to songwriters.

Beyond new categories, the Grammys are introducing a notable change to the voting process. A new system called Ballot Plus will allow eligible voting members with expertise across multiple genres to vote in up to 15 peer-reviewed categories rather than being restricted by the traditional 10/3 voting structure. Participation will require verification of professional credits and will be offered as an opt-in alternative.

Several eligibility rules have also been updated. Best New Artist guidelines have been revised, increasing the maximum number of times an artist can be submitted from three to four while providing greater clarity around eligibility criteria. The Academy stated that the change reflects the increasingly nontraditional paths artists take toward mainstream recognition.

Album eligibility requirements are becoming more flexible as well. Beginning with the 2027 ceremony, albums will need only 66% newly recorded material rather than the previous 75% threshold. The adjustment is intended to prevent widely recognized new projects from being excluded due to technical eligibility requirements.
