Latto may not be stepping away from music after all. Just weeks after sparking widespread speculation by referring to BIG MAMA as her “retirement album,” the Atlanta rapper has clarified that her comments came during a moment of personal and professional overwhelm as she adjusted to motherhood while navigating the rollout of one of the most significant releases of her career.
Speaking with Nadeska Alexis on Apple Music, Latto addressed the viral post directly. “I was overwhelmed. I’m experiencing motherhood for the first time. I’m dropping my album, my last album that I owe the label. So, it’s just like, I was going through it that day,” she explained. “Today’s a good day. I don’t know, I wouldn’t say I’m retiring today.”
The new comments offer a different perspective on the cryptic message she shared earlier this month on X. On May 5, the 27-year-old posted, “5/29 / My retirement album / Thank you for everything,” sending fans into immediate speculation over whether BIG MAMA would mark the end of her recording career. The timing raised eyebrows given the scale of the album rollout and the personal revelations surrounding its release.
Days later, Latto confirmed the birth of her first child with 21 Savage through an emotional trailer documenting her pregnancy journey. The visual featured footage captured in Tokyo during the early stages of pregnancy, intimate baby shower moments, clips with 21 Savage, and audio from the birth itself.
Released May 29 through Streamcut and RCA Records, BIG MAMA serves as Latto’s fourth studio album and the follow-up to 2024’s Sugar Honey Iced Tea. The 15-track set includes guest appearances from GloRilla, Doja Cat, 21 Savage, Sexyy Red, Mariah the Scientist, Odeal, Wizkid, Teyana Taylor and Jelly Roll.
