Back in the summer of 2021, Lorde released her third studio album, Solar Power. She returned to the studio in early 2023, confirming that she had started working on her next project, though she noted it would take time. The first hints of new music arrived in summer 2024, but it wasn’t until earlier this month that the Auckland-born singer began the official rollout for her new era. She initially teased a new track and then dropped “What Was That” on April 24. Sonically, the song embraces a synth-pop style reminiscent of her sophomore album, Melodrama. Awaiting its debut on global charts this week, the track has quickly become a fan favorite, already reaching the top 5 on Spotify’s chart.

On April 30, Lorde posted a cryptic photo captioned “Virgin,” and moments later, she officially announced the album alongside a pre-save link. She also shared the following statement: “AN ALBUM BY ME. PRODUCED BY ME AND JIM-E STACK WITH FABIANA PALLADINO, ANDREW AGED, BUDDY ROSS, DAN NIGRO & DEVONTÉ HYNES. MIXED BY SPIKE STENT AND TOM ELMHIRST. MASTERED BY CHRIS GEHRINGER. 100% WRITTEN IN BLOOD.” Additionally, Virgin will feature eleven tracks.

Earlier this month, Lorde offered a glimpse into the emotional weight behind the project: “Everything’s about to change and these are really the last moments where it’s just us… I’m so ready. I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to say that, but I am… This is gonna be crazy. You’ve no idea.”
