Olivia Rodrigo is giving fans a clearer look into the emotional core of her upcoming single “the cure.” During a recent appearance on the Elvis Duran Show, the 23-year-old singer opened up about the inspiration behind the track, describing it as a reflection on the false idea that love can solve everything.
“It’s sort of about how when you’re younger, you think falling in love with someone will fix all of your problems and then, when you face love and reality, realize that is not the truth,” Rodrigo explained.
The comment arrives just hours before “the cure” officially drops on Friday, May 22. Earlier this week, Rodrigo announced the single through social media, calling it “my favorite song on the album and one of my favorite songs I’ve ever made.” Fans immediately flooded the post with excitement, pushing anticipation for her third studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, to another level ahead of its June 12 release.
Rodrigo’s latest explanation also gives new meaning to the cryptic visual campaign unfolding across Los Angeles over the past several days. Murals featuring handwritten lyrics began appearing throughout the city earlier this week, including phrases like “why can’t you come stitch me up?” and “It’ll never be the cure.”
Momentum surrounding the era has been massive since the release of “Drop Dead,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 17. Earlier this month, Rodrigo performed the track live for the first time during Spotify’s Billions Club Live event in Barcelona, celebrating her growing catalog of billion-stream records on the platform.
Her Saturday Night Live hosting debut also helped shape expectations around the project. During the episode, Rodrigo introduced another unreleased song titled “Begged,” offering a stripped-back contrast to the sharper energy of “Drop Dead.”
