Mariah Carey has once again rewritten Billboard history. Her perennial holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has reached a record-breaking 20th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the longest reign at the summit in the chart’s 67-year history.
Originally released in November 1994 on Carey’s album Merry Christmas, the track has now surpassed the single-cycle Hot 100 reigns of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” and Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” In doing so, Carey claims the chart’s longevity record for the second time in her career. She previously held the benchmark with “One Sweet Day,” her 1995 collaboration with Boyz II Men, which led the Hot 100 for 16 weeks before being surpassed decades later.
“All I Want for Christmas Is You” has also logged its 77th total week on the Hot 100, tying Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” as the longest-charting song ever by a woman artist. The single returned to No. 1 last week, extending its record-setting run to a seventh holiday season at the top. Since first entering the chart’s top 10 in December 2017, the song has become an annual fixture.
