Olivia Rodrigo has revealed that Ariana Grande’s petal has been getting plenty of play in her headphones, and she would love to put her own spin on one of the album’s songs. The comment came during a new interview with Wonderland Magazine, just days before Rodrigo’s inaugural Daisy Chain Fields festival.
Asked which song she would like to cover in the future, Rodrigo pointed directly to Grande’s new album. “I’ve been listening to Ariana’s album [petal] a lot, so maybe something from Ariana’s album,” she said.
The answer adds another connection between two of pop’s most prominent current singer-songwriters, whose catalogs have often approached heartbreak, vulnerability and personal storytelling from very different angles. Olivia Rodrigo did not specify which petal track she has in mind, leaving the possibility open for a future live performance.
Ariana Grande released petal earlier this year, with the album becoming one of the biggest releases of 2026 so far. Rodrigo’s interest also comes as she enters a particularly active stretch of her own 2026 campaign following the release of her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.
Her latest song, “serena joy,” arrived August 24 as an outtake from the album, with all proceeds benefiting the Daisy Chain Fields Fund. Produced by Dan Nigro, the song draws inspiration from Serena Joy Waterford in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and shifts Rodrigo away from the relationship narrative that drives much of her latest album.
Rodrigo previously explained that she loved “serena joy” but ultimately left it off the finished album because its political subject matter did not fit the project’s chronological storyline. The song had already generated fan interest after behind-the-scenes material surfaced in June, revealing it as part of the original album sessions.
Its standalone release has quickly gained momentum. “serena joy” reached the top five on the global iTunes chart and peaked at No. 55 on Spotify’s Daily Global chart within its first two days, while a limited physical edition was released August 21 with only 500 CDs made available through Analog Record Shop in Orange County.
The release also serves as a lead-in to Daisy Chain Fields, which Rodrigo will host August 29 at Great Park in Irvine, California. Inspired by Lilith Fair, the inaugural all-women music festival features Chappell Roan, Doechii, Mitski, Bikini Kill, Garbage, the Breeders and KATSEYE, alongside special guests including Stevie Nicks, Sarah McLachlan and Karen O.
All participating artists are performing without fees, with 100% of net proceeds supporting organizations focused on women’s and girls’ rights, reproductive health and economic freedom.
