Olivia Rodrigo officially ushers in a new era with “Drop Dead,” pairing the lead single from her third studio album with a striking visual filmed inside Palace of Versailles. Released on April 17, 2026, the track sets the tone for you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, due June 12.

Clocking in at 3:44, “Drop Dead” signals a noticeable tonal pivot. The song leans into softer textures and romantic vulnerability, moving away from the sharper angst that defined SOUR and GUTS. Co-written with longtime collaborator Dan Nigro and Amy Allen, the track unfolds as the opening chapter of a broader narrative Rodrigo has been teasing across her rollout.

The accompanying visual, directed by Petra Collins, elevates that shift through scale and contrast. Shot inside the Palace of Versailles, the video places Rodrigo alone in one of Europe’s most opulent landmarks, moving through grand halls and ornate rooms with a dreamlike ease. Moments of quiet wandering give way to bursts of energy, culminating in scenes where she straps on a pink guitar and performs against the palace’s lavish backdrop.

Rodrigo shared her reaction to the release directly with fans, writing: “drop dead is out now!!!! I love this song so much!!! it’s the first chapter in the story of ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’ and it makes me wanna skip around and roll the windows down and make out! I was lucky enough to film the music video at the palace of Versailles a few months ago with the wonderful @/petrafcollins and I’m so stoked with how it turned out. I hope you guys love it as much as I do.”

The rollout surrounding the single has been equally deliberate. A global teaser campaign featuring pink padlocks and street art installations in cities like London, Paris, and Los Angeles built anticipation ahead of release. Early reactions suggest the shift is resonating, with fans quickly embracing what many are calling her “sad lover girl” phase.
