Olivia Rodrigo took a sharp creative turn on Friday night (April 24), debuting an unreleased track during an invite-only show at The Echo in Los Angeles. The 350-capacity gig, staged as a strict no-phones event, offered a new glimpse into her upcoming third album era.

Attendees described the new song—set to appear on You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love, due June 12—as a “heartbreaking ballad,” with Rodrigo leaning into a more vulnerable, pleading tone. Early reactions point to a stark contrast with the album’s lead single “Drop Dead,” which opened her next chapter with a brighter, punchier edge.

The setlist balanced past and present, threading the new material between career-defining hits. Rodrigo revisited “Drivers License,” “Deja Vu,” “Good 4 U,” and “Vampire,” reinforcing the throughline between her breakthrough era and her current evolution. A surprise appearance from Weyes Blood added another layer to the night, hinting at possible creative collaboration.

The performance arrived at the end of a dominant opening week for “Drop Dead.” Released April 17, the track debuted at No. 1 on the UK Official Singles Chart, becoming Rodrigo’s fourth chart-topper in the market. Each of her lead singles—“Drivers License” (six weeks at No. 1), “Good 4 U” (five weeks), and “Vampire” (2023)—has followed the same trajectory, giving her a rare 100% conversion rate when launching an album campaign in the UK.

Streaming figures underscore the scale of the rollout. “Drop Dead” opened with 10.709 million global streams on Spotify in its first day, debuting atop the platform’s Global chart and marking the biggest opening of her career. The track has held within the top three throughout the week, while also debuting at No. 1 in Australia on the ARIA Singles Chart.
