JENNIE didn’t simply perform at the world’s biggest festivals in 2026—she became one of their defining attractions. Over five months, the BLACKPINK star turned an ambitious international itinerary into a statement of artistic growth, commercial power and creative independence, while quietly laying the foundation for her second solo album.
The numbers and milestones tell one story. The performances themselves tell an even bigger one. From Hong Kong to Chicago, JENNIE transformed every festival appearance into a carefully planned chapter of an unfolding narrative, using some of music’s largest stages not only to celebrate Ruby, but also to introduce audiences to the next phase of her career.
The campaign officially began on March 22 at ComplexCon Hong Kong, where JENNIE became the first global female solo artist to headline any edition of the festival. While the performance highlighted favorites from Ruby, it also established the blueprint for the months ahead: cinematic production, fashion-forward styling and a balance between established hits and future material.
Momentum accelerated on June 7 at Governors Ball in New York. Rather than treating the performance as another festival stop, JENNIE surprised thousands of fans by previewing unreleased songs including “Less Than a Lover,” “Lock It Down” and “Heaven.” Debuting unfinished material at one of North America’s premier festivals reflected a growing confidence in her solo identity, while allowing audiences to become part of the album rollout before a single had officially been announced.
Europe elevated that momentum even further. On July 3, JENNIE headlined Denmark’s Roskilde Festival before immediately traveling to Poland to close Open’er Festival the following night. Those back-to-back appearances made her the first K-pop artist to headline two major European festivals on consecutive days. Less than a week later, she added another historic achievement by topping the bill at Spain’s Mad Cool Festival, becoming the only K-pop act featured among the festival’s headliners.
Across those European dates, Ruby remained the backbone of the setlist. Songs including “Mantra,” “Like Jennie,” “Handlebars,” “ZEN,” “ExtraL” and “Starlight” had already proven themselves as festival-ready anthems, while the unreleased material kept anticipation for the new album growing with every performance. Instead of separating eras, JENNIE blended them together, allowing one project to naturally introduce the next.
Meanwhile, JENNIE’s live domination also fueled a massive surge for “Dracula,” her remix of Tame Impala’s hit. The track kept gaining momentum and eventually cracked the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, making JENNIE only the second female K-pop soloist to achieve the feat—joining fellow BLACKPINK member ROSÉ.
For fans, the biggest moment on July 24 with the release of “Less Than a Lover.” The atmospheric single immediately justified months of festival teasing. Opening at No. 34 on Spotify’s Daily Global chart with 2.261 million streams, the song simultaneously topped iTunes charts in at least 27 countries, reached No. 1 on YouTube’s worldwide Trending Music Videos chart and became the best-selling single in China. The music video accumulated 5.7 million views during its first 24 hours, marking the biggest YouTube debut by a K-pop soloist in 2026.
Equally significant was the creative ownership behind the release. JENNIE served as the sole songwriter and composer on “Less Than a Lover,” while also directing its music video through her own company, Odd Atelier.
One week later came the defining performance of the summer. On August 1, JENNIE headlined Chicago’s Lollapalooza, becoming the first female K-pop soloist and the first Korean female solo artist to headline the festival. Her approximately hour-long, 18-song performance combined arena-scale visuals, live musicians, elaborate choreography and multiple costume changes with four unreleased songs, including the live debut of “Sweet Tooth.”
Rather than relying solely on nostalgia or familiar hits, the Lollapalooza set looked firmly toward the future. The decision to unveil so much unreleased material on one of the world’s biggest festival stages suggested complete confidence in the direction of her sophomore album. It also rewarded fans who had followed every stop of the festival run, creating a continuous storyline instead of isolated performances.
Outside the stage, JENNIE has been equally open about embracing a different creative mindset. During her recent Cosmopolitan cover interview, she revealed she has been recording extensively in Los Angeles while enjoying greater artistic freedom than ever before. She also spoke about eventually taking time away from constant public schedules after completing this chapter, emphasizing her desire to travel, experiment creatively and simply live without rigid deadlines for the first time in nearly a decade.
JENNIE brought her historic 2026 festival run to a commanding close with back-to-back headlining sets at Summer Sonic on August 14 in Tokyo and August 16 in Osaka, marking both her first solo appearance at the 25th-anniversary edition of Japan’s premier city-based music festival and the final chapter of a five-month journey that had already spanned ComplexCon Hong Kong, Governors Ball, Roskilde, Open’er, Mad Cool and Lollapalooza. Sharing top billing with The Strokes, Jamiroquai, L’Arc-en-Ciel and Ado, she delivered roughly hour-long, 18-song performances that mirrored the Lollapalooza blueprint—blending arena-ready Ruby anthems such as “Filter,” “Damn Right,” “Mantra,” “Handlebars,” “Love Hangover,” “ExtraL,” “with the IE (way up)” and “like JENNIE” with the recently released “Less Than a Lover” and a generous selection of unreleased tracks including “Sweet Tooth,” “Fallen Angel,” “Lock It Down” and “Heaven.”
Whether viewed through attendance, historic firsts or artistic evolution, JENNIE’s 2026 festival season has become much more than a successful promotional campaign. It has redefined what a K-pop soloist can achieve on the global festival circuit.
