The admission offers a personal explanation for changes in Selena Gomez’s speaking voice that fans have discussed for years. While the star did not share specific medical details about the effects she believes vaping has had, her comments suggest that she considers the change lasting.

Gomez has previously addressed questions about her voice. During an Instagram Live in December 2025, she responded to fans who had noticed differences in how she sounded, saying there was “no excuse” before adding that “sometimes things happen” and describing how her throat sometimes swells internally.

The singer has also been candid about her broader health journey. Diagnosed with lupus around 2014–2015, Selena Gomez later developed lupus nephritis, which led to kidney failure and a kidney transplant in 2017. Her friend Francia Raisa donated the kidney, an experience Gomez has described as life-changing. She has additionally spoken publicly about her bipolar disorder diagnosis and the challenges of managing her mental health.

The update arrives during an active period for Gomez, who hosted the fourth annual Rare Impact Fund Benefit at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on October 14, 2026. The event raised nearly $3 million for youth mental health initiatives, continuing her work through Rare Beauty’s philanthropic arm.
