Taylor Swift will make MTV VMA history this weekend as the first recipient of the new Artist Director award, a special honor created to recognize artists whose work behind the camera has helped expand the creative possibilities of music videos and visual storytelling.
The inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors will recognize Swift’s body of directorial work, which has become a major part of her artistic output over the past decade. From “The Man” and “cardigan” to All Too Well: The Short Film and her latest videos, Taylor Swift has increasingly taken control of the visual storytelling surrounding her music.

Swift has directed or co-directed a long list of her recent projects, including “willow,” “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” “Lavender Haze,” “Karma,” “I Can See You,” “Fortnight,” “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite.” Her work has already been recognized within the VMAs’ competitive Best Direction category, where she has received seven nominations and won four times.
The new award separates that achievement from the traditional competitive categories. Rather than recognizing a single music video, the Artist Director honor is designed around an artist’s sustained directorial identity and contribution to the form, making Taylor Swift the first artist to receive the distinction.
Her history with the VMAs makes the honor even more significant. Swift currently has 30 competitive Moon Person wins, tied with Beyoncé for the most in the ceremony’s history. She reached that mark in 2024 after taking home seven awards, including Video of the Year for “Fortnight.”
A special award would give Swift her 31st VMA overall and move her into sole possession of the record for most wins in the show’s history.
Taylor Swift originally received nine nominations for the 2026 VMAs, with additional fan-voted social categories bringing her total to 11. Her competitive nominations include Video of the Year and Best Pop for “The Fate of Ophelia,” Artist of the Year, Best Direction for “Opalite,” as well as Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Choreography and Best Visual Effects.
The 2026 VMAs will take place Sunday, September 27, at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, marking the ceremony’s first return to the West Coast since 2017. Snoop Dogg will host the two-hour event, which will air live from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS, simulcast on MTV and stream on Paramount+.
