Zara Larsson is giving Beyoncé fans a reason to revisit one of the superstar’s most unexpected visual moments. In the music video for “Blue Moon,” released October 15, the Swedish pop star recreates the playful aquatic glamour of Beyoncé’s 2008–2009 Japanese Crystal Geyser mineral water commercial, turning a deep-cut reference into one of the clip’s most talked-about details.

Directed by Charlotte Rutherford, the video embraces a colorful fantasy world filled with mermaid transformations, fairy-tale imagery, motel lots, billboards and splashes of water. Yet one sequence stands out for its unmistakable connection to Beyoncé: Larsson poses on a platform above open water in a bikini, jumping and playing with the splashing water beneath a bright blue sky. Rainbow effects and carefully staged water arcs complete the visual, recalling the larger-than-life energy of the commercial that Beyoncé filmed for the Japanese market.

The original advertisement featured Beyoncé in a sparkly dress and high heels, holding a Crystal Geyser bottle while dancing and smiling amid dramatic water effects. Although it was a commercial rather than a traditional music video, the high-production visuals eventually became an internet favorite among fans fascinated by the singer’s extensive catalogue of appearances. Zara Larsson also acknowledged the reference on Instagram, reinforcing the impression that the resemblance was intentional.

For Larsson, the tribute is hardly a surprising choice. Beyoncé has long been her number-one artist and one of her most significant influences, shaping her approach to performance, music videos and the level of ambition she brings to her own career. The singer has previously explained how she pushes herself through exhaustion by thinking, “Beyoncé would go one more time,” a remark that captures the work ethic she admires in her idol.

Their connection also extends beyond admiration from a distance. Zara Larsson met Beyoncé backstage in Stockholm in 2013 and later opened for her during the Formation World Tour in London in 2016. She has spoken about the overwhelming experience of watching Beyoncé perform night after night, even describing herself crying during the shows. Over the years, Larsson has continued to celebrate Beyoncé’s catalogue, from her defining hits to deeper cuts, while embracing the internet’s running jokes about her being the singer’s “white daughter.”

The “Blue Moon” video arrives as Zara Larsson gives fresh life to a song she has described as the sister track to “Midnight Sun,” the title track from her fifth studio album, released in 2025. Originally the album’s second track, “Blue Moon” was produced by Zhone, Margo XS and MNEK, who also co-wrote it with Larsson and Helena Gao. An alternate version featuring Kehlani appeared on the remix project Midnight Sun: Girls Trip in 2026.

Larsson previewed the video during her Midnight Sun Tour stop at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre on September 30, calling it “an era within an era” and describing it as her biggest-budget music video to date. The release positions “Blue Moon” as the album’s fourth single, giving the track a new visual identity more than a year after the original record arrived.
