Zara Larsson is entering a bold new chapter with her fifth studio album Midnight Sun, but the Swedish pop star admits her journey has been anything but straightforward. In a new interview with The FADER, Larsson spoke candidly about the highs and lows of her career and how she continues to measure herself against her past success.
“I’m comparing the success that I had so early on with what I did after that,” she revealed. “I had success and then flop, and then success and then flopiana, and now I feel the success again. But I know it goes up and down.”

Zara first broke through internationally with hits like “Lush Life” and “Never Forget You,” which catapulted her into the global pop spotlight. The former entered the Billboard Hot 100, peaked at No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart, and boasts over 1 billion streams on Spotify. But maintaining that momentum, she admits, has been challenging. The singer explained that her own expectations—and the weight of public perception—often created pressure to keep delivering blockbuster hits.
With Midnight Sun, released September 26 via Sommer House and Epic Records, Larsson says she finally feels she has crafted the record that best reflects her artistic core. Inspired by the endless glow of Swedish summer nights, the project explores themes of love, freedom, and suspended time. It has received critical acclaim and debuted with over 3 million streams on Spotify.
The album rollout has already delivered standout singles. “Pretty Ugly,” released in April, set the tone with its chaotic, rain-soaked video directed by Charlotte Rutherford. The shimmering title track, “Midnight Sun,” arrived in June, while August’s “Crush” quickly became a fan favorite with its infectious hooks.
