Dominic Fike has never been particularly interested in keeping his music inside neat boundaries, and How To Quit Smoking might be his most restless album yet. Released October 30, via Columbia Records, his third studio album captures an artist caught between the freedom of life on the road and the growing responsibilities of adulthood, turning an imperfect creative process into a 15-track snapshot of where he stands.

Described as a living album, How To Quit Smoking was written, performed and produced in real time while Dominic Fike toured North America on his Comedy Tragedy Parody Tour. Hotel rooms, green rooms and the tour bus became makeshift recording spaces before the material was refined at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas, and completed at Electric Lady Studios in New York City. The result is a record that often feels like an open window into his creative process rather than a carefully constructed studio statement. Some ideas arrive fully formed; others sound as though they are still finding their shape.

That spontaneity is both the album’s greatest strength and its most noticeable limitation. Across 15 songs, Fike moves between sun-soaked guitar pop, alternative hip-hop, conversational R&B and garage-rock textures, frequently bringing collaborators into the sessions. Seven tracks feature guest appearances, including Danny Brown, reggie, Grace Ives, Hether and Tay-K. At its best, the chemistry gives the record an infectious, almost communal energy. Elsewhere, the crowded arrangements and loose songwriting occasionally make it difficult to distinguish a finished song from an interesting idea.

Beneath the breezy melodies, however, Fike is wrestling with considerably heavier subjects. Fatherhood, aging, money, compulsive habits, childhood memories and the distance between home and life on tour shape much of the writing. That tension becomes especially clear on “Doomsday” and the sprawling closing track, “Spotlight / Inner Child,” where personal anxieties gradually give way to questions about resilience, connection and growing up.

The album also arrives during an unexpected career resurgence. “Babydoll,” his 2018 breakout, has found a new audience through TikTok, while “White Keys” adds another Billboard Top 40 hit to his catalog.
