ILLIT turn the tables on unrequited love with BREAK EVEN, their fifth mini-album, released on October 26. Across four tracks, the K-pop group moves from the dreamy excitement of falling for someone to the frustration of realizing the feelings were never mutual, turning romantic disappointment into another opportunity to experiment with their bright, electronic sound.
The EP follows MAMIHLAPINATAPAI, released on April 30, which explored the tension of two people waiting for the other to make the first move. Its techno-leaning title track, “It’s Me,” captured the confidence of someone determined to make a crush work, with the members boldly declaring their intentions. BREAK EVEN picks up when that initial excitement starts to lose its appeal, asking what happens when the emotional investment is no longer worth the return.
The title itself borrows from the financial concept of breaking even, the point at which gains and losses balance out. Here, the idea becomes a metaphor for recognizing a one-sided romance and deciding when it is time to stop trying. Rather than dwelling on heartbreak, ILLIT approach the subject with the playful attitude that has helped define their identity, channeling embarrassment, irritation and renewed excitement into four distinct pop tracks.
Opening with “Super in Love,” the mini-album immediately reveals a more emotionally charged side of the group without abandoning their electronic sensibilities. Shimmering synths, dreamy textures and buoyant rhythms create a sound that feels both intimate and expansive, while the vocal melodies capture the overwhelming rush of falling head over heels. There is a sincerity beneath the song’s bright production that makes it an instant standout and arguably one of ILLIT’s best tracks to date.
“More” pushes the energy higher, turning desire and ambition into a pulsing dance-pop rush. The track captures the frustration of wanting something that remains out of reach, giving the EP’s emotional progression a sharper edge. From there, “You’re Under Arrest” transforms romantic disappointment into a playful investigation, using bubblegum-pop hooks, whistle motifs and detective imagery to put someone on trial for giving the wrong impression.
Closing track “Pop” brings the story back toward possibility, pairing buoyant percussion and vibrant synths with the excitement of a fresh crush. After three songs examining the cost of misplaced feelings, its renewed optimism provides a natural conclusion without pretending that disappointment never happened. The shift also reinforces the EP’s central idea: moving on does not mean giving up on romance altogether.
The project arrives as ILLIT continue promoting as a quartet while Moka remains on a health-related hiatus that began in June.
