Zayn returns with KONNAKOL, a record that feels both intentional and exploratory, pushing his sound into new territory while staying anchored in the vocal precision that has long defined his catalog.

The project opens with “Nusrat,” an atmospheric entry point that immediately signals the album’s broader palette. Layered with subtle Eastern tonalities and restrained production, the track leans into texture over immediacy, setting the tone for a body of work that prioritizes cohesion over instant hooks. Across its 15 tracks, KONNAKOL blends Zayn’s R&B foundation with South Asian rhythmic influences, reflecting the meaning behind its title, which is rooted in the Carnatic practice of vocal percussion.

Moments of experimentation stand out without disrupting the album’s flow. “Fatal” shifts into electro-pop territory, pairing sharper synth work with a more dynamic vocal delivery that suits his range surprisingly well. Elsewhere, songs like “Used to the Blues” and “Side Effects” lean into introspection. That consistency becomes the album’s strongest asset, acting as the thread that connects its stylistic pivots.

Still, the pacing isn’t without flaws. Momentum softens in the closing stretch, where a few tracks feel less immediate compared to the stronger first half. Energy returns with lead single “Die for Me,” closing the record on a more defined note.

KONNAKOL follows 2024’s Room Under the Stairs, which debuted at No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 15 on the Billboard 200, marking a quieter, more stripped-back phase in his career.

Vocals, creativity, and cohesion remain the defining pillars on KONNAKOL. Each track feels intentionally placed, creating a listening experience that rewards full-album engagement rather than isolated singles.
