Early Life and Musical Beginnings (1998–2014)
Growing up in a small town in Missouri, Chappell discovered her passion for music at a young age. As a teenager, she began uploading cover songs to YouTube, showcasing her vocal talent and raw emotion. Between 2012 and 2015, she performed in her hometown, gradually making a name for herself. These early performances laid the foundation for her future career, attracting attention from both listeners and industry professionals.
Breakthrough and Record Deal (2015–2017)
At just 16 years old, Chappell wrote an original song titled “Die Young,” which gained significant attention and led to a major opportunity. At 17, she signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and released her debut EP, School Nights, in 2017 under the stage name Chappell Roan. The EP featured dark and moody themes, setting her apart from mainstream pop. That same year, she served as the opening act for Vance Joy on his Lay It On Me Tour. During this period, she moved to Los Angeles, fully embracing her artistic vision. She also explored her queer identity and incorporated vibrant, theatrical, and drag-inspired aesthetics into her performances.
Challenges and Reinvention (2018–2020)
In 2018, Chappell began working with Dan Nigro. In 2020, she released a string of singles, including “Pink Pony Club.” However, despite her promise as an artist, she did not achieve the commercial success Atlantic Records expected and was subsequently dropped from the label.
It was a difficult time. The world was in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and at just 22 years old, Chappell found herself without a source of income. Determined to rebuild her career on her own terms, she relocated to Los Angeles in October 2020. However, financial struggles made this reinvention challenging—she worked as a barista and took on several other odd jobs to support herself while continuing to create music.
Independent Releases and Growing Popularity (2021–2022)
Despite these hardships, Roan continued to release music independently, crafting songs that resonated deeply with the LGBTQ+ community and beyond. While “Pink Pony Club” slowly gained traction, her longtime collaborator Dan Nigro shifted his focus to working on Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album, SOUR. With fewer resources at her disposal, Chappell returned to Missouri, where she took a job at a drive-through while continuing to write and record music.
Her authenticity and bold style earned her a loyal fanbase. In 2022, she signed with Amusement Records and reunited with Nigro, setting the stage for her long-awaited breakthrough. That same year, she joined Olivia Rodrigo as an opener on the SOUR Tour and later supported Fletcher on the Girl of My Dreams Tour.
Debut Album and Critical Acclaim (2023)
Following the success of “Femininomenon” and “Casual,” Chappell embarked on the Naked in North America Tour, her first headlining tour, in 2023. Later that year, she released “Kaleidoscope,” “Red Wine Supernova,” and “Hot to Go!.” Then, on September 22, 2023, she reached a major turning point in her career with the release of her debut studio album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, through Island Records. The album received widespread critical acclaim for its exploration of self-discovery, queerness, and personal growth.
Mainstream Success and Recognition (2024–2025)
Chappell’s popularity skyrocketed in 2024, fueled by the global hit “Good Luck, Babe!” and standout performances at major festivals like Coachella and Governors Ball. She also gained mainstream exposure as an opening act on Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS tour. Later that year, her breakthrough was further recognized when she won Best New Artist at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.
Her meteoric rise continued into 2025, culminating in a career-defining moment when she won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist—an achievement that solidified her status as one of pop music’s most exciting new stars.
