Ariana Grande is putting fans’ minds at ease after announcing her upcoming public hiatus. During the Chicago stop of her Eternal Sunshine Tour, the pop superstar directly addressed speculation surrounding her decision, emphasizing that stepping away from the spotlight has been a long-term plan rather than a reaction to recent events.
Speaking candidly from the stage, Ariana Grande explained that the announcement had been carefully considered. “The announcement is not a reactive or impulsive thing. It’s a plan that I quietly made a long time ago,” she told the audience. “It’s a decision that was made from a thoughtful and empowered place.”
She also responded to concerns that online negativity had influenced her choice. “I heard that my fans were worried that negativity was ruining things for me — but I just have to say that could not be more the f*ck opposite,” Ariana Grande said. “This is not what that is. Multiple things can be true at the same time — boundaries can need to be set, human beings can need a break sometimes. This will continue to be the greatest experience of my professional and creative life.”
The emotional speech comes just days after a representative confirmed that Grande will step away from public-facing work once the Eternal Sunshine Tour concludes on September 1 at London’s O2 Arena. In a statement shared with People, the representative described the decision as an opportunity for the singer to take “a much-deserved break” after years of constant public scrutiny while emphasizing that she has loved every moment of the tour.
The timing is especially significant given Ariana Grande’s explosive new era. Her eighth studio album, petal, debuted with 62.19 million Spotify streams worldwide on its first day, while all 12 tracks entered the Daily Global Spotify Chart. The title track opened at No. 1 with 7.822 million streams, followed closely by lead single “hate that i made you love me” at No. 2, helping Grande finish July 31 as Spotify’s most-streamed artist globally.
Themes explored throughout petal closely mirror the conversation surrounding her hiatus. The Christian Breslauer-directed video for the album’s title track follows Grande’s alter ego Pepper as she repeatedly changes herself to meet impossible expectations, only to face relentless criticism. The visual has widely been interpreted as a reflection on fame, public perception and the pressure to remain constantly visible.
Her representative also confirmed that Grande has stepped away from playing Dot in the Barbican’s planned 2027 revival of Sunday in the Park with George, reinforcing her intention to slow down after the tour.
