Bad Bunny is set to take on his first leading film role in Porto Rico, an epic historical drama exploring the origins of Puerto Rico. The Caribbean Western will be directed by Residente, who makes his feature directorial debut with the project.
Backed by Live Nation Studios, the film is inspired by true events and promises to blend historical narrative with a lyrical, poetic tone. According to an official press release, the story will revisit foundational chapters of Puerto Rican history, approaching them with both cinematic scope and cultural specificity.
Born Benito Martínez Ocasio, Bad Bunny will star alongside an international cast that includes Javier Bardem, Viggo Mortensen, and Edward Norton.
For Bad Bunny, the move marks a pivotal expansion of his artistic reach. While he has previously appeared in high-profile projects such as Bullet Train and Narcos: Mexico, this is his first time carrying a film as its central figure. The timing is notable. He enters the project at a career peak, fresh off a dominant 2025 that saw him named Spotify’s Global Top Artist for a record fourth time and recently scoring a Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 with “DtMF” following his Super Bowl halftime show. He is also set to headline Spotify’s Billions Club Live in Tokyo, marking his first-ever performance in Asia.
Residente, a Grammy-winning artist long recognized for politically charged and culturally rooted work, described the film as a lifelong ambition. “I have dreamed of making a film about my country since I was a child,” he said in a statement. “Puerto Rico’s true history has always been surrounded by controversy. This film is a reaffirmation of who we are — told with the intensity and honesty that our history deserves.”
