Britney Spears has once again suggested that her music career is behind her. In a deeply personal post shared on on August 7, the pop icon reflected on motherhood, her conservatorship and the emotional toll of performing, declaring that she no longer wants to be part of the music industry.
The lengthy message accompanied throwback photos of her sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, before shifting toward her career. Spears wrote that the industry no longer resembles the place she once loved, explaining that her relationship with music fundamentally changed during the years she spent under conservatorship.
“I don’t want to be in the business and frankly the thought of the business … It’s not like it was when I was younger,” Britney Spears wrote. “My intention and mindset were in a completely different place when I used to perform… Not one time in those 15 years was it ever me and the way I used to think … I was shamed, embarrassed and forced to do all of it.”
Elsewhere in the post, Spears apologized to her children and reflected on moments when she felt she had failed as a mother. She also criticized her parents, recalling a summer when her sons were taken to the beach without her knowledge while she remained under the restrictions of the conservatorship.
Although the comments have sparked renewed speculation about her retirement, they largely reinforce statements Spears has made since regaining her freedom in November 2021. In early 2024, she insisted she would “never return to the music industry,” revealing that she had instead written songs for other artists. Months later, in January 2026, she said she would never perform in the United States again for “extremely sensitive reasons,” while leaving open the possibility of sharing a stage with one of her sons in the future.
Britney Spears has not released a solo studio album since Glory in 2016. Her last major musical release arrived in 2022 with Elton John on the global hit “Hold Me Closer,” which introduced her voice to a new generation after years away from recording.
The singer has continued reshaping her life outside music. Earlier this year, she sold her publishing and recorded music catalog to Primary Wave in a deal widely reported to be worth between $150 million and $200 million. She has also spoken about focusing on personal healing, exploring creative hobbies such as making soap and candles, and spending less time on social media.
