Charli xcx is doubling down on artistic honesty ahead of her next release. Days before unveiling the new single “SS26,” the British pop provocateur posted a series of reflective messages on X about creativity, public expectation, and the pressure of existing online in 2026.
“excited for you all to hear this new music,” she wrote. “i can only ever make what feels true to me. i’m not thinking about anything else while i’m making it. not reception or audience or anything else. just my connection with it and whether it feels honest to me.”
The post quickly circulated across social media as fans connected her comments to the increasingly polarized discourse surrounding “Rock Music,” the chaotic lead single released May 8. Charli followed her initial statement with two additional posts that further clarified her mindset entering this new era.
“if you get me, you get me and if you don’t, you don’t. and thats ok,” she added, before expanding even further on the emotional weight behind her recent work.
“i’m not trying to repel people away or convince people into liking me. i’m doing what i feel is truthful to me. i think existing as a human being in 2026 is really hard for a multitude of different reasons. my solace is art but sometimes that doesn’t even really feel safe in this day and age. maybe you feel the same idk? just giving you my thoughts. love you xx.”
The candid posts arrive as anticipation continues building around “SS26,” which drops Thursday, May 21. Earlier this week, Charli officially announced the single through a cryptic visual styled as a luxury fashion invitation reading: “You Are Invited to attend the presentation of Charli xcx SS26.” The rollout also includes a video presentation directed by creative duo Torso scheduled for 4 p.m. PT.
