Harry Styles is speaking with unusual candor about the loss of Liam Payne and the personal reckoning that followed.
In a wide-ranging interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, aired ahead of his fourth studio album Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally., Styles reflected on the emotional complexity of grieving in public. Payne, his former One Direction bandmate, died in October 2024 at age 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina. Since then, Styles has largely avoided detailed public commentary. This conversation marks one of his most direct acknowledgments of the impact.
“Even the idea of talking about it, I struggle with that,” Styles admitted. “I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of like own part of your grief in a way.”
The 32-year-old singer described feeling an unspoken pressure to externalize his mourning. “I have such strong feelings around my friend passing away and then suddenly being aware that there’s maybe a desire from other people of you to convey that in some way, or it means you’re not feeling what you’re feeling or something, you know.”
For Styles, the challenge was not only the visibility of his grief but the intimacy of the loss. “It’s so difficult to lose a friend. It’s difficult to lose any friend, but it’s so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways,” he said. “It’s like I saw someone with the kindest heart, who just wanted to be great.”
Beyond mourning, the moment forced introspection. Styles framed Payne’s death as a turning point. “It was a really important moment for me in terms of taking a look at my life and being able to say to myself like, ‘OK, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?’”
Ultimately, Styles returned to a simple philosophy when speaking about Payne. “I think the greatest way you can honor your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest,” he said. “Like, super special person and really sad.”
As previously mentioned, Styles’ appearance on Apple Music comes as he prepares for his comeback. In the interview, the popstar discussed his recent single “Aperture,” calling it a catalyst for growth. “Do I do this because this is what I’ve been doing for a long time or do I do this because I really love it?” he asked. “Being able to look at myself and actually just grow up a little bit and take responsibility for places in my life where it was maybe my fault just freed me from so much.”
