Harry Styles paid tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne on October 16, debuting an unreleased song he wrote for his friend during his Madison Square Garden residency. Titled “What Is Enough,” the acoustic track was performed exactly two years after Payne’s death, turning the anniversary into an emotional moment of remembrance for Harry Styles and his audience.
Before playing the song, Styles reflected on the people who had helped shape his career and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to perform at an arena that meant so much to him. “I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York,” he started. “There’s so many people in my life, friends and people that I’ve worked with, that I’ve never been able to do this without them. And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends,” he told the crowd, acknowledging that people in the audience might also be carrying the pain of losing someone close to them.
He then offered a simple message about looking after one another, getting home safely, and telling loved ones how much they matter.

Harry Styles explained that he had written the song for Liam Payne around two years earlier before beginning the intimate performance. “I’m gonna play a song that I wrote for my friend about two years ago, and uhm, if that’s alright and then uhm, we’ll get all through. This is What is Enough.”
Among its lyrics was the line, “You dance until you’re tired, among the stars above, the friend in all those satellites.” The stripped-back delivery gave the unreleased track room to breathe, with its imagery of stars and distant satellites lending the performance a poignant sense of connection beyond loss.
The tribute took place during Harry Styles’ unprecedented 30-show Madison Square Garden residency, part of his 50-date Together, Together tour supporting his fourth album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. Running from August 26 through October 31, the New York engagement is the tour’s only U.S. stop and builds on the 15 consecutive nights he previously performed at the arena during Love On Tour.
Liam Payne died on October 16, 2024, aged 31, after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His death devastated fans around the world and prompted tributes from Styles and their former One Direction bandmates Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. The five singers first came together on The X Factor in 2010 before becoming one of the defining boy bands of the decade and going on hiatus in 2016.
Although their careers eventually took different directions, the connection between Styles and Payne remained meaningful. Payne once described Styles as someone who seemed to have a “sixth sense” for recognizing when he was struggling and would reach out. Styles also reflected on his friend’s death during a March 2026 conversation with Zane Lowe, describing Payne as having “the kindest heart who just wanted to be great” and discussing the importance of living life fully in honor of those who are gone.
