Background
Scheduled for release on March 7th via Streamline and Interscope Records, Mayhem marks Lady Gaga’s first studio album since 2020’s Chromatica. She began work on the project in 2022, recording new material over the span of two years at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La studio in Malibu, California. Throughout the process, Gaga kept fans updated with studio photos and cryptic hints about new music. In early 2024, she declared she was “writing some of the best songs I can remember.”
Momentum for the album began building with the release of Gaga: Chromatica Ball, a concert film that concluded with a snippet of unreleased music. Later, she performed at the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony, where fans caught glimpses of two new songs. In August, Gaga teamed up with Bruno Mars on the chart-topping single “Die With a Smile,” which broke streaming records by becoming the fastest song to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify. Following this success, she released Mayhem’s lead single, “Disease,” in October.
Tracklist
While Gaga has yet to reveal the full tracklist for Mayhem, fans already know some key details. First, it will feature 14 tracks. Originally, “Die With a Smile” wasn’t planned for the album but was later confirmed as part of the project due to its immense popularity. In addition to “Disease,” Gaga released two alternative versions of the single, titled The Antidote and The Poison.
Fans may not have to wait long for more music—there’s speculation about another single dropping before March 7th. Observant fans even noticed a potential February 13th release date hidden in the code on Gaga’s website. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Gaga shared that the first track she wrote for Mayhem remains one of her favorites on the album.
As for collaborations, no guest features have been confirmed yet. However, rumors about a potential duet with The Weeknd have intensified after the Canadian star shared a cryptic photo on Instagram.
Music and Genre
Gaga has described Mayhem as “chaotic” and “genre-bending,” blending industrial dance music with a range of other influences. She revealed that the album was born from a period of deep introspection and personal challenges. Describing it as “a transgressive journey through genres,” Gaga shared that the record reflects her diverse musical inspirations and life experiences.
