More than 16 years after his death, Michael Jackson continues rewriting music history. The King of Pop has officially surpassed 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify for the first time ever, reaching a milestone few catalog artists — and even fewer legacy acts — have ever approached in the streaming era.

The achievement arrives during an unprecedented commercial resurgence fueled by the release of Michael, the Antoine Fuqua-directed biopic starring Jaafar Jackson. Since premiering theatrically on April 24, 2026, the film has generated nearly $600 million worldwide and reignited global demand for Jackson’s music across every major streaming platform.

Spotify numbers around Jackson accelerated rapidly over the past three weeks. Following the film’s opening weekend, his monthly audience jumped from roughly 68 million listeners to over 73 million within days. Growth continued at an extraordinary pace afterward, climbing past 85 million, then 95 million, before finally crossing the 100 million threshold this weekend.

At the center of the resurgence stands “Billie Jean,” which recently reached No. 1 on Spotify’s Daily Global chart with 6.028 million streams in a single day, the highest daily ranking the 1983 classic has ever achieved. More remarkably, the song accomplished the feat 43 years after its original release on Thriller.

Streaming consumption across Jackson’s catalog has exploded since the biopic debuted. U.S. on-demand streams reportedly surged between 95% and 146% during key tracking periods, while his solo catalog generated a career-best 137.5 million official streams in one week.

Several classics have experienced dramatic gains simultaneously. “Beat It” climbed into Spotify’s global top 10 earlier this month, while “Smooth Criminal,” “Thriller,” “Human Nature,” “Dirty Diana,” “Rock With You,” and “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” all posted new streaming highs during the film’s theatrical run.

The momentum has extended beyond individual songs. Thriller recently returned to the top five of the Billboard 200, while Number Ones re-entered the top 10.
