Rihanna made one of the biggest surprise appearances of the year on Sunday, July 12, joining JAY-Z during the final night of his historic Yankee Stadium residency. Before launching into two of her biggest hits, the global superstar greeted the crowd with a smile and admitted, “Y’all know I’m rusty, right? It’s been a while. Y’all with me right now?”

Dressed in a sleek black leather outfit with fur accents and oversized sunglasses, Rihanna received a thunderous ovation before performing “Run This Town” alongside JAY-Z. She then stayed onstage for a solo rendition of “B**** Better Have My Money,” which recently surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify, reminding fans why every rare live appearance instantly becomes a headline.

The performance capped JAY-Z’s three-night sold-out residency at Yankee Stadium, where he celebrated the anniversaries of Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint. The finale also featured Beyoncé, Usher, Pharrell Williams, Jeezy, Swizz Beatz, Clipse, Jadakiss, Fat Joe, Jermaine Dupri, The-Dream and several other guests, but Rihanna’s return stood out as one of the evening’s defining moments.

Her comment about being “rusty” carried extra weight considering how infrequently she has performed over the past decade. Since releasing ANTI in 2016, Rihanna has largely stepped away from music to focus on building the Fenty empire while embracing motherhood. Outside of a handful of singles—including the Oscar-nominated “Lift Me Up” in 2022—live performances have become increasingly rare.

The singer’s most recent concert before Sunday came in 2024, when she traveled to India for the lavish pre-wedding celebration of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant. According to the Associated Press, Rihanna reportedly earned more than $6 million for the private performance, where she told the audience it was her “first real show in eight years.”

Every appearance inevitably revives speculation surrounding R9, her long-awaited ninth studio album. Earlier this year, another viral moment reignited that conversation after a fan joked that “2026 is the new 2016.” Rihanna responded, “You know what 2016 was…,” an unmistakable nod to ANTI, which celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this year.

She has repeatedly insisted that new music is still on the way, previously telling Harper’s BAZAAR that she spent years searching for a sound that feels authentic rather than rushing to meet expectations. Sunday’s performance won’t silence questions about R9, if anything, it may leave fans wondering whether Rihanna’s return to the stage is the beginning of a much larger comeback.
