JAY-Z closed his historic three-night Yankee Stadium residency on July 12 with his biggest show of the weekend, bringing out Rihanna, Beyoncé, Usher and a long list of hip-hop stars for the “Extra Innings” finale. The sold-out concert capped a Bronx run celebrating the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint, while expanding the final night into a career-spanning showcase.
Unlike the first two evenings, which centered around landmark albums, night three pulled from nearly every era of JAY-Z’s catalog. Songs from The Black Album, The Blueprint 3, Magna Carta Holy Grail, American Gangster, Watch the Throne and 4:44 all found their way into the nearly three-hour performance.
The night didn’t begin smoothly. A security breach outside Yankee Stadium forced officials to temporarily close the gates, leaving thousands of fans waiting for hours before entering the venue. The show ultimately started more than four hours behind schedule, prompting JAY-Z to address the situation from the stage. Explaining that organizers wanted to avoid fans being trampled, he joked that he was prepared to perform until 5 a.m. The concert eventually concluded around 3 a.m.
Once underway, however, the delays quickly faded into the background as surprise guests continued arriving throughout the evening.
Rihanna made one of the night’s biggest appearances, joining JAY-Z for their chart-topping collaboration “Run This Town” before returning for “B**** Better Have My Money.” Beyoncé once again shared the stage with her husband, performing a medley that included “Drunk in Love,” “Tom Ford” and “Partition.”
The guest list continued to grow with appearances from Teyana Taylor, Jeezy, Swizz Beatz, Jermaine Dupri, The-Dream, Clipse, Jadakiss and Fat Joe, transforming the concert into a celebration of JAY-Z’s collaborations across nearly three decades.
