K-pop’s biggest labels are no strangers to collaboration, but few expected three of HYBE’s most prominent girl groups to unite on a single track. That changes this week with “ICONIC BY MISTAKE,” a bold new collaboration from LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT, and KATSEYE that arrives on streaming platforms June 12, while its cinematic music video premiered on June 10.
The release immediately stands out as one of the most ambitious girl-group crossovers in recent memory, bringing together artists from three different generations and markets under the HYBE umbrella. Rather than playing it safe, “ICONIC BY MISTAKE” leans into the criticism, scrutiny, and online discourse that have followed all three acts throughout their rise.
Built around a booming pop-dance production infused with hip-hop and electropop elements, the track transforms internet negativity into an anthem of self-confidence. Its hook — “I am iconic by mistake” — serves as both a tongue-in-cheek response to critics and a declaration of resilience. Throughout the song, the members address online hate directly with lines such as “Hating me is like all you do, breakfast to dinner” and “Thank you for the comments, it’s because of all your hate,” turning criticism into fuel rather than frustration.
The music video amplifies that message through a series of visually distinct worlds that highlight each group’s identity before ultimately bringing them together. LE SSERAFIM’s segment unfolds in a dramatic, storm-filled environment featuring flames, statues, and gothic imagery. The group’s signature confidence is front and center as they navigate a landscape that feels both apocalyptic and empowering.
ILLIT takes the video in a completely different direction. Their section unfolds inside a surreal dental clinic packed with teeth motifs, metallic grills, and playful horror-inspired visuals.
Meanwhile, KATSEYE delivers some of the project’s most cinematic moments. Performing in a wind-swept field illuminated by lightning and dramatic visual effects, the global pop group combines synchronized choreography with high-fashion styling.
As the video progresses, the boundaries between the three groups begin to disappear. Shared scenes, large-scale choreography, and explosive visual effects culminate in a final act that presents LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT, and KATSEYE as a unified force.
The release arrives during a particularly busy period for all three acts. LE SSERAFIM recently launched their PUREFLOW era with “BOOMPALA” and announced a global tour. ILLIT continues to build momentum following the success of “Magnetic” and subsequent releases, while KATSEYE is preparing for the arrival of WILD in August alongside their sold-out WILDWORLD tour.
