Madonna and Charli XCX have fans wondering whether a collaboration is on the way after the two pop stars exchanged a cryptic message on Instagram. Madonna shared a newly posted video with the words “Thinking about Charli…..,” prompting Charli to jump into the comments with an intriguing response: “wait…. i got something i wanna talk about!”

The exchange immediately sent fans into speculation mode, particularly given the pair’s recent history and the timing of the tease. Neither artist explicitly confirmed a collaboration, but Charli’s suggestion that she has “something” to discuss has added fuel to theories that the two could be preparing a new song, remix, or performance together.

The interaction comes only weeks after both artists released major new albums. Madonna’s Confessions II arrived July 3 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 134,000 equivalent album units, giving the pop icon her 10th chart-topping album and her strongest opening week since 2012.

The project also marked a return to Madonna’s dance-pop roots, with tracks including “Love Sensation” and “Bring Your Love,” the latter featuring Sabrina Carpenter. “Bring Your Love” reached No. 74 on the Billboard Hot 100, extending Madonna’s presence on the U.S. singles chart.

Charli XCX, meanwhile, released Music, Fashion, Film on July 24. The album opened at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 78,000 units and topped the Top Album Sales chart, while also giving Charli another No. 1 album in the U.K. The record followed the enormous cultural impact of her 2024 album Brat and her work on the Wuthering Heights soundtrack earlier this year.

Their latest exchange also carries some history. Earlier this year, Charli’s “Rock Music” included a lyric declaring the dancefloor dead, a line that appeared to provoke a response from Madonna while she was promoting Confessions II. Whatever tension existed did not last long: the two were later seen partying together in Paris in June.

Now, the timing of Madonna’s message is particularly interesting. Charli is preparing to launch her Music, Fashion, Film Tour on September 11 in Philadelphia, beginning a North American arena run that continues through October 23 in Las Vegas, with Underscores serving as the opening act.
