Megan Thee Stallion has released her brand new single “BOA” as the third single from her upcoming third album. Listening to the song, backing the rapper’s vocals is a melody that might be familiar. In fact, the song clearly samples Gwen Stefani‘s 2004 hit “What You Waiting For?”. This sample is not the only reference to the past. The title itself is taken from Boa Hancock, a character from the popular manga One Piece. Along with the song, Megan has also released an impressive accompanying music video, which features several nods to 2000s pop culture, especially iconic video games. In the video, the rapper performs a finishing move that seems to recall the one featured in Cassandra’s from Soul Calibur, but also the one from Street Fighter’s E. Honda. In addition, there are various references to Mortal Kombat, including a lightning bolt move and a spit move. Other notable video games referenced include Temple Run, Space Channel 5, and Bust a Groove.

The song, the music video, and its 2000s nostalgia have been highly appreciated by fans. “I need a feature-length horror film from Megan Thee Stallion at this point because these music video concepts are everything,” a fan shared on X/Twitter. “Megan Thee Stallion never fails to deliver a stunning music video… LOOK AT THESE VISUALS,” another added, “the sample, the visuals.. her verse, oh Megan Thee Stallion you’ll never miss.”
Released independently through Hot Girl Productions, “BOA” follows “Cobra” and “Hiss” as official singles from Megan Thee Stallion’s upcoming third studio album, expected to be released this year. Although an official date for the album hasn’t been scheduled yet, one certainty is that the San Antonio rapper is embarking on the Hot Girl Summer Tour, set to commence next week, on May 14th, in Minneapolis.
