Olivia Rodrigo is opening up about the emotional lessons behind her first truly intimate relationship, revealing how falling in love forced her to confront parts of herself she had long avoided. During a new appearance on Popcast, the singer reflected on the illusion that romance could “fix” personal struggles.
“When I was younger, I was always reaching for something,” Rodrigo explained. “I was like, ‘Oh, if I have this, then I’ll be happier.’” As the relationship developed, however, she realized emotional wounds do not disappear through validation from another person. “I think falling in love actually makes those issues even clearer to you,” she said.
The candid comments arrive as Rodrigo launches the next phase of her third studio album campaign. “The cure,” released on May 22 via Geffen Records, has quickly become one of the most discussed songs of her current era thanks to its confessional lyrics and expansive production. Co-written and produced by longtime collaborator Dan Nigro, the nearly five-minute track marks Rodrigo’s longest official release to date.
Rodrigo previously hinted at the song’s meaning during an appearance on the Elvis Duran Show, where she described “the cure” as being about “the false idea that love can solve everything.” Her latest Popcast interview expands that idea into something more personal and uncomfortable. “This is like holding a mirror to me,” she recalled thinking during the relationship. “I’m seeing sh*t that I don’t like about myself.”
That emotional self-examination has become central to the rollout for you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, Rodrigo’s upcoming third album due June 12. Earlier this week, handwritten-style murals appeared across Los Angeles featuring cryptic lyrics including “why can’t you come stitch me up?” and “It’ll never be the cure,” triggering widespread fan speculation before the single announcement officially arrived.
Momentum surrounding the project has continued building since “Drop Dead” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 17. Rodrigo later performed the song live during Spotify’s Billions Club Live event in Barcelona after previewing another unreleased track, “Begged,” during her Saturday Night Live hosting debut earlier this month.
