Tyla marked her return to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, Jan. 27, delivering a confident and visually striking performance of her viral single “Chanel.”

The South African superstar brought her signature blend of pop, amapiano and attitude to the late-night stage. She offered a polished live rendition of the track that continues to gain global momentum. Dressed in a Chanel Spring/Summer 2026 ready-to-wear look, Tyla matched high fashion with high energy. She also incorporated the viral “Chanel dance challenge” into the choreography.

The appearance marked a full-circle moment in her career. Nearly three years ago, Tyla made her U.S. television debut on the same stage with her breakout hit “Water.” At that time, she was still emerging on the international scene. Since then, her rise has been swift and historic. The singer went on to earn her first Grammy Award and establish herself as one of the most influential African artists of her generation.

Her self-titled debut album produced global hits including “Water,” “Push 2 Start,” and “Jump.” All of these fueled her crossover success across pop and dance markets. In summer 2025, Tyla expanded her sonic direction with the EP We Wanna Party. This release was designed to bridge the gap between her debut and her forthcoming sophomore album, expected later this year.

Following the EP, Tyla doubled down with “Chanel,” a track that has quickly become one of the defining songs of her current era. The single has now surpassed 200 million streams on Spotify and closed out 2025 with a historic milestone. On New Year’s Eve, “Chanel” earned 4.18 million global streams in a single day. This set the record for the biggest daily streaming total ever achieved by an African artist on the Global Spotify chart. The song peaked at No. 8 and surpassed Tyla’s own record previously held by “Water.”

As she prepares for her next chapter, Tyla has been open about the creative mindset shaping her upcoming album. During a recent Instagram Live, the 23-year-old artist described the project as light, personal and reflective of her growth over the past year.

This album is gonna be very fun,” she shared. “It’s gonna be speaking about a lot of things that I felt throughout the year — not like deep. Just me, my life, what I’ve been experiencing as a pop star, as a South African pop star.”
