Jhené Aiko returns with Westside Whimsy, her first full-length studio album in six years, and the record immediately settles into the patient, atmospheric style that has long defined her music. Across 20 tracks, Aiko favors space, softness and detail, allowing her voice to remain the central instrument even when the production shifts around her.
The album opens with the brief, jazzy “Wild Cat(s),” before easing into the slow-burning “Ghost” and “Break.” Both tracks establish the project’s unhurried pace, with Aiko’s ethereal vocals floating over sparse, carefully layered production rather than pushing toward conventional R&B peaks.
By the fourth track, “Love Bomb,” Jhené Aiko changes the texture slightly with a smoother rap delivery, joined by Ab-Soul’s understated presence and ad-libs. The song adds movement without disrupting the album’s overall sense of calm. “Ceiling (Freestyle)” and “He Belongs” continue that approach, finding tension in restrained performances rather than dramatic production changes.
That patience becomes one of Westside Whimsy’s defining qualities. Songs often feel connected, with Aiko’s vocals acting as the thread between dreamy ballads, slow-burning grooves and more intimate moments.
The album’s most immediate moment arrives with “So Good,” Aiko’s long-awaited reunion with Kendrick Lamar. Years after their previous collaboration, the two artists find an easy chemistry on the ethereal ballad, with Lamar complementing rather than overpowering Aiko’s performance.
Larry June also fits naturally into the album’s California-inspired world on “Neighbors,” while later songs shift the focus toward beaches, reflection and a quieter sense of resolution.
Released September 11 through ArtClub International and Def Jam, Westside Whimsy also represents the completion of a long-delayed chapter. Years of postponed plans, canceled touring, motherhood and personal changes shaped the road to Westside Whimsy, but Aiko never appears interested in rushing through what she has to say.
