Kacey Musgraves has never been particularly interested in standing still, but Middle of Nowhere may be her clearest demonstration yet that returning home can be its own form of reinvention. Released May 1 through Lost Highway Records, her seventh studio album transforms solitude, post-breakup recalibration, and Texas iconography into one of the most sonically cohesive records of her career.

Following the hushed introspection of Deeper Well in 2024, Musgraves pivots sharply without abandoning emotional precision. This time, she leans deeper into regional specificity, incorporating elements of Western swing, bluegrass, norteño, zydeco, mariachi, and classic country.

That thematic foundation shapes the record’s strongest songs. “Middle of Nowhere,” the title track and emotional centerpiece, immediately establishes the album’s duality, evolving from reflective acoustic restraint into a fuller country waltz. Lead single “Dry Spell” also emerges as one of the album’s standouts. To bring this blend of country influences to life, Musgraves collaborated with Miranda Lambert, Billy Strings, Gregory Alan Isakov, and Willie Nelson.
