Friday, September 18 brings a packed new-music window, with Miley Cyrus, ROSÉ and beabadoobee each arriving with projects that move in sharply different directions. From dance-pop and distorted guitars to grunge and ’90s alternative rock, the night offers three distinct versions of what a new era can sound like.
Miley Cyrus leads the releases with Bass Persuades, her 10th studio album and first project released under the mononym Miley. It is also her first album for Atlantic Records following her departure from Columbia, with the 10-track set arriving after a tightly controlled campaign that began with cryptic “MILEY” teasers.
The title track introduced the era on September 3, pairing pulsing ’80s synths and a four-on-the-floor beat with a heavier post-punk edge. Cyrus followed it with “Let’s Get Married,” which arrived with a music video on release day. Other tracks include “Different Religion,” “Orbit,” “Aftermath,” “REDLIGHTS,” “Innocent Ways” and “Snow,” while the project also features Model/Actriz and Andrew Wyatt of Miike Snow.
Cyrus has described Bass Persuades as a layered love story connected to both her engagement to Maxx Morando and her relationship with herself.
ROSÉ, meanwhile, is taking a more playful route with “New Trick,” a standalone single that arrives separately from her still-untitled second album. The song was written with frequent collaborator Amy Allen in May, two days after the Met Gala, and represents a clear shift from the melancholy that shaped much of her 2024 debut solo album rosie.
Built around distorted guitar, layered vocals and a bright pop-rock hook, “New Trick” finds ROSÉ embracing a lighter mood.
The Dave Meyers-directed music video adds another layer to the release. Shot entirely on Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro for the Shot on iPhone campaign, the visual uses bright colors, a purple lollipop and a playful aesthetic that matches the song’s tone.
beabadoobee takes the night in a considerably heavier direction with Pylon, a 14-track album built around distortion, grunge, Midwest emo and ’90s alternative rock. The title comes from the electricity towers she repeatedly saw while touring, which became a symbol of her connection to home during periods of isolation on the road.
The album’s lead single, “Sun Has Set,” introduces its more confrontational side, while “Nothing to Prove” features Hayley Williams. Turnstile’s Brendan Yates appears on “Powerlines,” with additional contributions from Chino Moreno, Pinegrove’s Evan Stephens Hall and Title Fight’s Shane Moran.
Noteworthy releases also come from Lizzy McAlpine, Yeat, Carly Rae Jepsen, Troye Sivan, Tove Lo, and more.
