Ava Max has set the stage for her next era, but the conversation isn’t just about the music. The pop star’s newly announced single “Outta Your Mind,” revealed on April 13 and due April 15, has ignited immediate debate over its artwork.
Instead of a traditional campaign rollout, Ava unveiled a striking fantasy-inspired cover showing two versions of herself—one armored and standing, the other kneeling—set against a deep red backdrop. Within hours, fans discovered the image wasn’t commissioned through a typical creative team. The artwork originated as a fan concept created by @thehellbed on X, who later confirmed it included AI-generated elements and had been adopted at the last minute. “I am HONORED to have made Ava Max’s cover for ‘Outta Your Mind’ I WILL BE STREAMING SO SHOULD YOU,” the creator wrote.
Reaction fractured quickly. Supporters praised the decision as a rare moment of fan recognition at a major-label level, framing it as a democratization of pop visuals. Critics pushed back harder, pointing to the use of AI and the creator’s history of sharing unauthorized material. One longtime fan wrote, “As a fan of 7 years, I’m incredibly disappointed… This is slop. Ai slop.” Another added, “so excited for the song but please change the cover to something that is not made by ai…”
Tension around the decision is amplified by Ava’s own past comments. An older clip in which she states “AI doesn’t have a soul” has resurfaced, fueling accusations of inconsistency. The controversy arrives during a transitional phase in her career. Earlier this year, she launched her independent era with “Kill It Queen,” released February 25 following her departure from Atlantic Records and her 2025 album Don’t Click Play.
